Tribute paid to Addie Doull in council chamber

A TRIBUTE was paid to the late Addie Doull in the Shetland Islands Council chamber this morning (Wednesday).

Depute convener Catherine Hughson, who led the tribute, said “Shetland has lost one of its true gentlemen”.

Doull, who represented the Shetland North ward as a councillor from 2007 to 2012, passed away last month at the age of 81.

Hughson said Doull “understood the importance of strong local communities and of people working together”.

She described him as “a man rooted in place” who was devoted to land and livestock as a crofter at Islesburgh in Northmavine.

“He was an acknowledged expert and passionate advocate for native sheep and cattle and for the quality and character of Shetland wool,” she said.

Regarding his time as a councillor, during which he was also vice-chair of the development committee, Hughson said Doull was a “thoughtful and considerate gentlemen” in public life.

“His greatest legacy lies in the quiet, enduring contribution he made to Shetland life,” she added.

“He was described by those who knew him as humble and modest and that he cared deeply about our islands and our people.

“Those qualities are easy to overlook in a world that often celebrates the loudest voices.”
