Netball team fundraising to cover ‘steep costs’ of island games in Jersey

SHETLAND’S netballers are aiming to raise funds to travel to an invitational island games competition in Jersey next month.

It is the second time Shetland will have taken part in a netball-only island games event, following an inaugural competition in the Isle of Man in 2023.

The three-day competition in late October will see Shetland come up against the likes of Guernsey, Jersey, Ynys Môn, Orkney and a team from France.

Mharii Witt, the parent of Shetland player Danielle Witt, has now set up a GoFundMe page to help the blues get to the Channel Islands.

She said the team had been trying to raise funds to help cover the “steep costs” of travel to Jersey, with a Sunday teas and an online auction held recently.

Now people are being encouraged whatever they can to help get Shetland to Jersey for the games, which take place between 30 October and 1 November.

Folk can ‘buy a mile’ for just £2 to push them towards their target, with people also encouraged to share the fundraiser among friends, family members and local businesses.

“To get our squad across the water we have set up a fundraising target of £1,980 to help cover our steep travel and competition costs,” Mharii said.

Shetland travelled to the first invitational netball island games In Isle of Man in 2023, and beat Ynys Môn 60-49 in their opening fixture.

After defeats to Jersey and Isle of Man, Shetland then beat Guernsey 49-44 before a narrow loss to Orkney in their final fixture.
