BRESSAY Sharks claimed the first silverware of the outdoor football season after a penalty shootout victory over Ness C on Friday night.

In a game played between hail showers on the new all-weather pitch in Lerwick, Jewson League Cup holders Bressay took the lead in the first half after a Ryan Nicolson strike following a free-kick.

Ness levelled before the break from the penalty spot through John-Robert Burgess, scoring at the second attempt after keeper Stewart Reid saved the first spot-kick.

The Bressay Sharks retained the League Cup on Friday night.

However a retake was ordered by the referee for infringement inside the box.

And Ness completed the turnaround early in the second half, Lewis Black sliding the ball beyond the onrushing Reid to give them the lead.

Bressay battled back into the game and levelled through an unlikely source, centre-back Jack Tulloch swinging a foot at a loose ball and finding the roof of the net to make it 2-2.

That took the game straight to penalties, and though Bressay missed their first spot-kick, Reid was on hand to superbly save Ness’ first two efforts to ensure the Sharks had the advantage.

Precise penalties from captain Dale Keith, Daryn McDonnell and Nicolson ensured Bressay retained the Jewson League Cup trophy.

In the Highlands Fuels cup, a hat-trick from Gary Scott and two from Greg Tulloch helped holders Whitedale to beat Thistle 5-2 and advance to the semi-finals as group winners.

Their reward is a tricky tie against Celtic, who they will meet on Friday at 6pm. Scalloway will play Ness in the other semi-final afterwards, with both games on the North Loch Park pitch.

The top team in group B was Colin Bain, Tommy Fullerton, and Christine Donald.

The final was a closely contested affair with plenty of high quality bowls.

The club thanked all players and spectators for attending, all those who helped organise the competition and everyone who kindly provided home bakes, sandwiches, and refreshments.
