CINEMA ticket prices at Mareel are set to rise, Shetland Arts has announced.

Tickets for films on Friday nights and weekends will go up to £12.10, starting with April’s films – which go on sale on Thursday.

Off-peak screenings on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Friday afternoons will now cost £9.90, while under-16s will pay £7.15.

That is the same price that a ticket will cost on Mareel’s “Cheap Tuesdays” too.

All ticket prices include a 10 per cent booking fee.

The increases for on-peak screenings and Tuesdays represents a £1.10 uplift, while the off-peak increase is £1.65.

Shetland Arts said the changes would help “ensure the long-term sustainability of the cinema”, allowing it to “continue offering our current programme of screenings”.

However, the arts trust added it would be introducing new memberships to give audiences more ways to save when visiting the cinema.

The memberships will launch alongside the updated cinema ticket prices, which will take effect for April films going on sale on 26 March.

Shetland Arts said it had to make the “difficult decision” to increase prices due to rising costs, “including energy costs and our commitment to being a real living wage employer”.

Its new memberships include an “individual membership”, which offers cinema-goers the chance to pay £35 annually and to get four free cinema tickets per year.

They will also get £1 off “per different film”, and 10 per cent off snacks at Mareel’s kiosk.

The arts trust has also introduced a £10 per year family membership, which includes two discounted adult tickets when booked with children and a discount on snacks.
