Arts / Finalists named for young musician of the year
THE FINALISTS of the young musician of the year competition have been revealed after a bustling first day at this year’s youth music festival in Mareel.
The first day saw over 200 junior age children sing and perform from Hamnavoe, Cunningsburgh, Sandwick, Aith, Scalloway and schools across Lerwick.
The heats for the young musician of the year took place in the afternoon and evening, with Marelize Meier (piano), Emily Grieve (voice), Trinity Zalekesina (voice) and Kaela Mikolajczak (violin) making up the junior finalists.
The senior finalists are Douglas Jamieson (flute), Aisulu Goddard (voice), Eilith Gunn (violin), Corey Burns (drums), Lauryn Reid (piano) and Martha Robertson (voice).
“Choosing finalists from an incredibly strong line up of entries was a difficult task, and the overall performance standard was exceptionally high,” this year’s adjudicator Anne Macdonald said.
“Hopefully by pure luck the wide choice of instruments represented in the competition finals will also provide a varied evening’s entertainment as well as showcasing the variety of instruments on offer in Shetland.
“Parents and teachers should be rightly proud of this group of youngsters and all that they have achieved so far.”
Tomorrow’s (Wednesday) final at Mareel starts at 7pm, and tickets can be purchased here.
