Court / Lerwick woman banned after guilty plea for drug driving

A WOMAN from Lerwick has been disqualified for a year and fined £500 after admitting driving while more than six times over the legal limit for cannabis.

Defence solicitor Tommy Allan tendered a plea of guilty for Vicki Marie Sales, who was not at court when the case called this morning (Thursday).

The court heard that the 38-year old was stopped by police on South Lochside just after 5pm on 6 March last year.

She tested positive for cannabis and was taken to Lerwick police station for further tests.

Speaking in mitigation, Allan said his client was not well enough to be present at court.

He said Sales was on a medical prescription for cannabis, but at the time of the offence the prescription had lapsed – though the cannabis she had taken had been supplied as part of the prescription.

He added that his client went back on to the prescription shortly after the incident.

Sales pleaded guilty to have 13 microgrammes of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in one litre of blood, when two microgrammes is the legal limit.

Sheriff Philip Mann said after hearing the mitigation he would restrict the period of qualification to the minimum available, which is one year.
