- Climate change survey
- Youth space pilot project
- New sheriff principal
- Temporary bus timetable changes
SHETLAND Islands Council has launched its second climate change survey.
The six-week survey is open until 9 March, with people able to complete an online survey. Paper copies are available on request by calling 01595 693535.
The SIC’s climate change strategy team leader Claire Ferguson said: “This is a great opportunity for us to hear from the community about climate change and what that means from a Shetland perspective.
“Our first survey showed that people really care about the environment and their communities, and that lots of people are making positive changes at home. “It’s also fed into our work as to how we as a council can tackle climate change while supporting the community and bringing positive benefits.”
PLANS are underway to look at the idea of running a six-month pilot project where Islesburgh Community Centre in Lerwick is used as a space for young people.
SIC youth and employability team leader Martin Summers said the project stems from an ask of young people from Shetland Youth Voice which came out of their ‘Public Spaces’ summit last year.
The SIC is currently recruiting for two temporary youth workers for the project, with the aim of having the space staffed on Friday afternoon and evenings.
It would be complementary to the SIC’s existing ‘Hub’ on Lerwick’s Commercial Road, which is available on Monday and Wednesday evenings, as well as OPEN’s cafe which takes places on Thursdays at the town’s Methodist Kirk hall.
SHERIFF Andrew Miller has been appointed as the next Sheriff Principal of Grampian, Highland and Islands.
His career saw him become a solicitor advocate in 2003, and a sheriff in the Grampian, Highland and Islands region in 2013.
Sheriff Miller has served as a sheriff at Peterhead Sheriff Court and, since 2017, at Aberdeen Sheriff Court. He will take up the new role on 1 March.

THERE will be changes to the 23 and 24V bus services as a result of roadworks.
Due to a new weight restriction on the Dales Lees road to allow for more cabling work, both services will divert through Brae until 29 May.
Roadworks are also in progress at the Nesting junction on the A970, also for cabling work, which will affect the bus stop there.
To allow passengers to continue to meet scheduled ferry sailings, the diversion through Brae means changes to bus timetables as follows:
Service 23 Lerwick to Toft
From Monday 2 February until further notice:
• The service will not serve the Nesting Junction stop in either direction
• Passengers wishing to travel to Nesting can use Service 20 which will link to the Service 23 at Girlsta bus stops during this period – this is a bookable service and passengers must book by 16:00 on the day preceding travel via ZetTrans on 01595 745745
From Monday 2 February to Friday 29 May inclusive:
• The 17:10 departure from the Viking Bus Station will move to 17:00, Monday to Saturday
Service 24V North Isles Integrated Service
From Monday 2 February to Thursday 19 February inclusive:
• Depart Tesco at 13:30 and Viking Bus Station at 13:40, on Mondays
• Depart Tesco at 13:50 and Viking Bus Station at 14:00, Tuesday to Saturday
From Friday 20 February to Friday 29 May inclusive:
• Depart Tesco at 14:10 and Viking Bus Station at 14:25, Monday to Friday

Shetland Islands Council and ZetTrans said they recognise that slightly earlier departures may cause inconvenience to some passengers during this period.
