SHETLAND Badminton Association held its under-11 and under-15 championships over the weekend.

Saturday saw the under-11 event, with five girls doubles pairs playing off against each other. There were some really close games but Ava Swift and Isla Slater picked up the title by beating Nicole Hupalo and Ayanna Robertson 21-5, 21-3.

Four pairs battled it out in the boys doubles, with Lewis Odie and Peter Winson winning 21-6, 21-5 against James Leslie and Finlay Robertson for the trophy.

The girls’ singles saw two groups, with Swift coming top in group A and Slater in group B both winning all their games with ease.

The final between those two was the best of the day, with excellent rallies and the girls having to find space in the court.

Swift took set one 22-20 but Slater dug deep to take the second 24-22, setting up a decider. Swift won this 21-17 to secure the title.

The boys’ singles saw again two groups, with Winson topping group A and Odie working hard to lead group B.

The final was another excellent game to watch, but Odie had the edge this time winning 21-14, 21-18. The association gave huge congratulations to Odie and Swift for winning the double.

SUNDAY saw the under-15 championships played, with some under-11s and under-13s playing up against their older opponents.

The girls’ singles saw four groups, with Libby Hunter progressing to the final after beating Carrie Bennett and Shanice Anderson beating Fallon Winson.

The final was a close game but Anderson had the edge winning 21-19, 21-17.

The boys’ singles also had four groups, which saw top seed Lowrie Nicol and second seed Adam Spence progress to the final.

In the final Spence took the first set 21-15, but Nicol recovered to win the next two sets 21-16, 21-17.

It was another close final in the boys’ doubles, where twins Adam and Theo Spence met cousins Andrew and Lowrie Nicol.

The Spence brothers took the first set 21-19, but again the Nicol contingent recovered to win 21-19, 21-17 and take the trophy.

The girls’ doubles saw two groups with Anderson and Hunter combining to make the final against Bennett and Marah Mann, where they eased to victory.

Theo Spence was able to get his hands on a trophy in the mixed doubles, where he and Hunter combined to lift the trophy.

The badminton association gave special thanks to Clickimin and to Malakoff for their continued sponsorship.

IT WAS back-to-back defeats for Shetland women’s volleyball team at the weekend, despite creditable performances.

In their first match against Dundee Anchor the blues made a few mistakes which allowed Dundee to move five points ahead early on.

Shetland did the best they could with the resources they had, workinghard to push the ball up and over the net whenever possible.

There were moments of confusion, with a few unforced errors and players colliding as they tried to figure out whose ball it was. However, determination never dipped.

Despite their efforts, Shetland could not close the gap, and Anchor maintained control throughout to win 3-0.

A special shout-out goes to Angelina Lai, who stepped in at the last minute to support the Shetland team when they were short on players.

Edinburgh Jets 3’s were up next, and they wasted no time in asserting their dominance over Shetland by taking control of the tie.

From the opening rallies, Shetland struggled to keep up and were unable to gain the upper hand or take the lead at any point throughout the match.

Shetland continued to battle on with the team they had available, with several players adapting to unfamiliar positions and roles on the court.

Their effort did not go unnoticed, as there were moments of sharp thinking, solid pick-ups, and improved communication as the match progressed.

The match concluded with a 3–0 victory for Jets 3, leaving Shetland defeatedbut creditable for their perseverance and willingness to adapt under challenging circumstances.
