Community / Festive spirit in full force at Skeld tractor run as hundreds raised for CLAN
TRACTORS, trucks and even a kayak were decorated in lights and tinsel on Sunday to celebrate the second Skeld and Reawick Christmas run.
The event had originally been planned for Saturday night, but poor weather pushed that back to Sunday afternoon.
Despite the conditions it proved to be a great success, with 10 vehicles andeven two dogs dressed up in festive outfits to take part, much to the delight of everyone watching.
The line-up featured an impressive mix of vehicles – large and small tractors, cars, trucks, a quad, a kayak and even a classic MG 1975.
Every entry was decorated with Christmas lights and festive displays, with participants putting in a huge amount of effort for the festive celebration.
The run set off from Skeld Hall, making its way out towards Westerskeld before looping back past the hall and continuing onto Reawick for a loop around there.
Afterwards folk returned to the hall to warm up and enjoy chips, pizza, soup, tea and tabnabs.
It was then time for the eagerly awaited prize-giving, with Hayley Goddard on hand to give out awards to several deserving winners.
Nine-year old Bobby-Joe Johnson, from Tresta, won the best dressed tractor prize for his vintage 1968 Massey Ferguson 135 which was decorated with antlers, lights and a wooden sleigh in tow too.
Thomas, Ethan, Isla, Joe and Danni took home the best dressed non-tractor award for their Northwards trucks adorned with light-up reindeers and sleigh.
And most novel entry went to Katie Brigden and Bobby Slater, along with Shetland sheepdog Olive, who had a well-lit kayak strapped to the roof of their car with Santa Claus paddling his oar.
CLAN staff Claudia, Joanna and Lorna were on hand to judge, and said choosing the winners was “extremely difficult” because of the lengths people had gone to.

The raffle was also a huge attraction, with prizes on offer ranging from tokens to the star prize – a neep, always a firm favourite at a Skeld Hall raffle.
All proceeds from the raffle were donated to CLAN, raising an impressive £545 for the cancer support charity.
The event’s organisers thanked all the participants, judges and stewards, and to all the businesses that donated prizes and raffle items.
They added it was a “fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy some festive fun and socialise”, and gave a special thanks to everyone who helped ensure it ran smoothly and successfully.
Meanwhile the Shetland Young Farmers’ annual Christmas tractor run is set to take place in Lerwick tomorrow (Tuesday) evening.
It will set off at the marts at 7pm and head into town, going along the Esplanade and then ending up at the Anderson High Scholl car park.
It will also be raising money for CLAN, with donations able to be made online.
