Court / Court round-up 19 November

A TEENAGER who stole cat toys and vapes from homes after a vodka binge has pledged never to do it again.

Matheus Guyan, from Norgaet, Lerwick, admitted stealing an Amazon package containing £50 of cat toys from another Norgaet address on 20 May this year.

The 18 year old was also seen at two different addresses in the area on the same day, with police charging Guyan with intention to commit theft in both homes.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said Guyan was seen on Ring doorbells trying the doors of both addresses, while carrying the Amazon package.

A full 24 hours later, Guyan entered an address in Bloomfield Place and stole four vapes while the homeowner was in.

People outside the house saw Guyan and challenged him when he left. The police were called and he was arrested.

The court heard Guyan did not recall carrying out the offences, and that he had consumed a “large quantity of vodka” beforehand.

Guyan, representing himself, told the court he “really shouldn’t have done it”.

“It was so stupid. It’s not going to happen again.”

Sheriff Cruickshank placed him under supervision for six months and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work during that time.

A YOUNG driver who tried to blame his girlfriend after hitting a sheep in Yell has been fined and left on the brink of a ban.

Zac Price, from Mid Yell, initially told police that 19 year old Chloe Paton had been driving the car when he struck a sheep on the B9081 public road between Burravoe and Aywick on 19 October 2024.

Price, 20, had failed to report the incident to police. And witnesses at the scene said Price seemed “indifferent” about the animal, but more concerned about the car.

Defence agent Gregor Kelly said Price had “panicked” when quizzed by police about who had been driving the car, which belonged to Paton.

Price was not insured to drive the car, and he also admitted driving without insurance. Paton, from Burnside, Lerwick, had previously admitted allowing Price to drive the car without insurance.

Kelly said Price lived “very rurally” and that having a car was “very much a lifeline for him”.

He told the court Price already had five penalty points, and urged the court not to take his licence away.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined Paton £300 for allowing Price to drive without insurance, and fined Price a cumulo fine of £500 for failing to report the incident and driving without insurance.

Price was also given a further six penalty points on his licence, leaving him with 11 and on the brink of a driving ban.

A WOMAN who reported a driving accident she was the victim of ended up losing her own licence at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

Caitlin Desvaux, from Sandwick, was found to be over the limit for delta-nine tetrahydrocannabinol – better known as THC – after another car crashed into her on 24 May this year.

The 20 year old had been driving her father’s car through the roundabout junction between North Road and North Lochside, in Lerwick, when another car crashed into her.

Desvaux called the police to report the crash, but when she did police asked her to do a drug swab which found she had 3.3 microgrammes of THC per litre of blood.

The legal limit is two microgrammes.

The court heard Desvaux had co-operated fully and had been asked to drive the car at short notice. She had thought she would be under the limit.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined Desvaux £400 and banned her from driving for 12 months.
