SWIMMER Julian Okroj set three new Shetland records in the pool over the weekend in another series of great performances from the teenager.
All eyes were on the Clickimin for the GTS Winter Meet this weekend, for three days of swimming action.
Okroj was the headline-grabber yet again among a slew of top performances from Shetland’s swimming contingent, breaking three records in the 13/14 age group.
He set new best times in the 50m freestyle, 100m individual medley and 100m backstroke.
And Okroj’s time in the backstroke event – 59.94s – was the first time anyone has finished in under a minute in Shetland.
He was certainly not alone in bettering his best times at the event, with Lerwick Amateur Swimming Club saying its members had recorded almost 120 PBs over the three days.
Five meet records were also broken by Lerwick ASC’s Lewie and Archie Redfern (in the 12-13 100m butterfly and 14+ 100m breaststroke, respectively) and Lili Szucs (12-13 years 100m breaststroke).
The club’s 12-14 years relay team bettered meet records in the 4x50m freestyle and 4x50m medley too.
Shetland Hurricanes, who organised and ran the GTS Winter meet, thanked everyone who attended and made it an “excellent weekend of racing”.
Coach Petur Petursson said it was “lovely to so many younger swimmers from all five clubs mixing with older swimmers and enjoying this wonderful sport.”
A total of 126 swimmers recorded 464 personal bests between them over the three days, with 13 new meet records set across all the age groups.
Petursson thanked Babs Ross and Jeremy Chittlebirgh for refereeing, all the officials, the committee and all of the swimmers and volunteer coaches from all five clubs.
Steven Kerr memorial trophies were given to the girl and boy who gained the most points over the weekend, with each race scored from 10 for first place to one for 10th place.

It was Ellie Thompson (Shetland Hurricanes) and Lowrie Adamson (South Mainland ASC) who took home the Steven Kerr memorial trophies for their performances.
The GTS Winter Meet trophies are also presented to the girl and boy with the largest improvement in time since they swam in the same event the previous year.
This year the trophies went to Eve Moncrieff (Shetland Hurricanes), who improved her 1,500m freestyle time by over four minutes, and to Oisin Robinson (Lerwick ASC) who took over a minute off his 1,500m freestyle time.
SHETLAND men’s volleyball team recorded a home win over Dundee in Aith over the weekend.
The blues welcomed teams from both Dundee and Aberdeen to the West Mainland Leisure Centre on Saturday for division one fixtures.
Volleyball Aberdeen Cortex were up first, and they took the first two sets 25-14, 25-20 to comfortably move into a two-set lead.
Shetland threatened a comeback by winning a marathon set three 26-24, but Aberdeen held their nerve to take the final set 25-14 and seal a 3-1 win.
Things looked ominous for Shetland when they then lost the first set to Dundee, 25-23, but despite tired legs they rallied to turn the game on its head.
They won the next three sets to secure the victory and a 3-1 overall win.
THE SHETLAND men’s rugby team recorded their first victory of the season with a hard-fought and impressive home win over Mackie on Saturday.
The side had lost four on the bounce in the league before the weekend, but turned over third-placed Mackie 41-26 at the Gilbertson Park to end that streak.
Next up is another home fixture, this time against second-placed Gordonians 2nd, in Lerwick this coming Saturday as they look to make it two wins from two.
It will be a home double-header for rugby fans this weekend, with Shetland Valkyries also due to host Aberdeenshire Quines at Gilbertson Park.
Their away tie with Caithness Krakens had to be postponed this weekend, and will be played at a later date.
THREE Shetlanders were in the starting line-up for football team Golspie Sutherland on Saturday, but they were unable to come away with the three points against unbeaten Invergordon.
Henry Oldbury started in goals, with Lewis Harkness and Henry Oldbury also in the starting 11, as Golspie hosted Invergordon in the North Caledonian league.
It was Invergordon, who have now won all seven of their league fixtures, who came away with a 3-1 victory on the day.
