Sport / Sporting round-up 10 November
SHETLAND Valkyries recorded an enormous win on Saturday, scoring over 100 points on their way to a home thrashing of Caithness Krakens.
The women from Caithness made the trip north to take on the Valkyries at the Gilbertson Park on Saturday afternoon.
And they were well and truly beaten by the rampant Valkyries, who scored 107 unanswered points in a dominant display.
Caithness Krakens now have to dust themselves down and prepare to welcome the Valkyries to Caithness this coming weekend for the return league fixture.
FOOTBALLER Lewis Harkness was named man of the match after a top performance for Golspie Sutherland at the weekend.
Harkness was on the scoresheet and keeper Henry Oldbury kept a clean sheet as Golspie beat Inverness Athletic 4-0 on Saturday.
Spencer Moreland helped Brechin City in the second round of the Highland League Cup, meanwhile, after Brechin scored with virtually the last kick of the game.
Moreland started the match against Clachnacuddin, in which Brechin fought back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 before a last-gasp equaliser.
However Brechin scored in the 94th minute to progress, and will now face Nairn County at home in round two.
VENTURE and Hot Geckos recorded victories as the mixed volleyball league returned last week.

Rexel fought back to 16-16, but Venture held steady, and a strong serving run from Louise Birnie closed out the set 25-18.
The third set began at a fast pace, with the youngsters on both sides reacting quickly. Rexel grew in confidence as the game went on, hitting more freely.
Despite Rexel’s best efforts, Venture stayed composed to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
MVPs were Paul Hibbert and Ellie Nicolson for Rexel, and Colin Kirkness and Valeska Pearson for Venture.
In match two there was little to separate Benchwarmers and Hot Geckos in set one, with the teams tying up at 10-all.
As the set neared its end Geckos opened up another small gap, but great serving from Lukasz Prawdzik brought Benchwarmers back into contention at 23-21.
Despite their efforts they couldn’t quite get in front, and Geckos took the first set 25–22.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with the scores level at 5–5.
Paula Williamson and Jamieson hit well for Benchwarmers, while Wayne Leask and Keira Tulloch were equally effective for Geckos.
A crucial moment came after an extended rally, won by Geckos following a fine exchange that saw a Leask spike well picked up by Jarryd Jamieson.
That point seemed to give Geckos the momentum, and they took the set 25–18.
The standard of play remained high in the third set, with the score close at 11–10. Strongteamwork and accurate serving from Jamieson saw Benchwarmers pull ahead 15–10, but Geckos quickly fought back.
With good serving from Ava Sim, Geckos turned the game around to lead 20–17.
The set tightened again at 22–22, before Prawdzik stepped up to serve and helped Benchwarmers finish strongly, taking the set 25–22.
Best for Hot Geckos were Keira Tulloch and Ben Laurenson, while Colleen Henderson and Lukasz Prawdzik stood out for Benchwarmers.
THERE WAS no shortage of energy or excitement at Aith Table Tennis Club as two seasoned competitors battled it out in the Aith over-75s singles competition.
In a match where every point mattered, John Tulloch impressed the crowd with his wicked serves, pinpoint placement, and razor-sharp chops. But Jim Moncrieff proved an equal match, responding with relentless topspin rallies and rock-solid defence.
All three games went right down to the wire, with only two points separating the players each time.
In the end, it was Moncrieff who edged ahead to claim a narrow victory, 11–9, 11–9, 12–10.
After the final point, coach and club organiser Piotr Drozdowski presented winner Moncrieff and runner-up Tulloch with their well-deserved trophies.
Aith Table Tennis Club meets every Thursday from 7–9pm at West Mainland Leisure Centre, run by Drozdowski.
