Arts / Arts agency aiming to reopen Bonhoga in April
THE BONHOGA art gallery and cafe could reopen in April following significant refurbishment work.
The Shetland Arts venue in Weisdale has been shut since late 2023.
The refurbishment work aims to make the former mill building more energy efficient and accessible.
Shetland Arts’ accounts for 2024/25 said that, prior to the end of the financial year, Shetland Arts entered into a contract for refurbishment work worth around £600,000.
It has received funding for the project, such as from Shetland Charitable Trust and the SIC-administered coastal communities fund.
The project has fallen behind initial timescales, however, with Shetland Arts initially saying it had hoped it would be finished in 2024.
In March it was said the hope was for the work to be concluded by the end of 2025.
But Shetland Arts board chairman Jamie Manson said at the charity’s AGM on Thursday that the plans are to reopen in April 2026.
He added that the arts agency is looking “forward to welcoming customers back”.
Meanwhile a new graduate staff member joined Shetland Arts earlier this month to work on a future business plan for the venue.
