Court / Court round-up 30 July

Jury trials are set

A WOMAN from Lerwick who took someone else’s bank card to make purchases has been given 80 hours of unpaid work to complete.

Laureen Johnston, 47, of Upper Sound, used the card on more than ten occasions on 7 and 8 March this year.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday that the owner of the card had gone to custody, with his wallet left at his sister’s house.

The court heard that Johnston took the wallet, used the card to take out cash and bought items – including cigarettes and food – in shops such as the Co-op in Lerwick, and on private hire taxis.

Defence agent Gregor Kelly said Johnston used the card because she believed the owner owed her money, but added that “she accepts she should not have this”.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank gave the unpaid work order as an alternative to a financial penalty.

A MAN from Bressay has been fined £200 after he admitted punching a man on the body on a night out in Lerwick.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday there were no injuries sustained in the assault, which was carried out by William More, 39, on 26 January at the Lounge Bar.

Defence agent Gregor Kelly said there had been some “provocation” involved in the incident, including recording video on a mobile phone.

A MAN from Shetland appeared in private at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday on 15 alleged contraventions of the sexual offences (Scotland) act 2009.

These mainly included allegations of sexual assault and indecent communication.

Ian Herridge, 71, made no plea, was committed for further examination and was released on bail.
