Community / Bressay busy for 300th parkrun
ORGANISERS of the Bressay parkrun say they were “completely blown away” by the number of people who took part in its 300th event this weekend.
There were a total of 175 people taking part on Saturday morning, with the Bressay ferry crew putting on extra runs to help get everyone to the island.
There were 109 first-time participants in the 5K run/walk, some of whom were from as far as Canada, the US, Morocco and London.
Also among the visitors were a large group of orienteers who were in Shetland for an orienteering event.
First across the line in the 300th event was James Ackland in 16.54, with Anna Drinkwater the first female across the line in 19.12, setting a new personal best (PB).
There were 11 further PBs, and Chris Atkins crossed the line as Bressay parkrun’s 4,000th different finisher.
Organisers also thanked the many volunteers involved in the event.
Since its launch in Bushy Park London more than 20 years ago, parkrun has grown to 2,000 locations in 22 countries, including Bressay.
Since launching in 2018, people gather at the Bressay ferry every Saturday morning for the short trip across the sound – with the event conveniently finishing outside the Speldiburn café.
Participants can run, jog or walk over the five kilometre distance, and while it is timed, it is not a race.
