Council / Housing in mind as SIC buys former Brae police station
THE FORMER police station in Brae has been bought by Shetland Islands Council (SIC) with government funding for possible future development as housing.
Police Scotland put the building, which was not routinely used by officers, up for sale last year as it was deemed surplus to requirements.
The fact that it has been sold to the SIC was mentioned in a meeting of the local community safety and resilience meeting last week.
But chairman Allison Duncan said it was “breaking news to most of the councillors”.
In a statement issued on Monday, a spokesperson for the SIC confirmed that it has been bought with future housing development in mind – with conversion and demolition among the possible options.
It cost £70,000, which was funded by the Scottish Government.
In addition to the station itself there is a small officers’ accommodation building on the site too.
“The former Brae Police Station and flat was acquired by Shetland Islands Council earlier this year using funds from the Scottish Government, for possible future development as housing,” the SIC spokesperson said.
“Discussions are ongoing between our housing service and the Scottish Government to convert or undertake new build housing, which will help to address housing demand in the area.”
The building is located next to the village’s fire station.
