News / Lerwick roads set for ‘microsurfacing’ works

AROUND three weeks of surfacing work is to be carried out on the streets of Lerwick beginning this Sunday.

The work, being carried out by Shetland Islands Council, will result in numerous road closures on the affected streets as specialist contractors undertake what is described as “microsurfacing” work.

Depending on the weather, the work is due to get underway on Sunday (14 August) and access to the affected streets will be prohibited from 8am to 6pm each day.

That is to allow time for a “liquid emulsion and aggregate mix” to be applied to the road surface, and to give time for it to dry. Parking restrictions will also be in place, indicated by yellow “no parking” cones that will be placed out the day before.

Residents will be advised of the dates of the closures by letter and the SIC will also have updates on its website at www.shetland.gov.uk/roads/Lwk-surfacing-2016.asp

SIC infrastructure committee chairman Michael Stout said: “We have to carry out this maintenance work to reduce the need for more substantial, disruptive and costly road works.

“This microsurfacing work will result in a better quality road surface for all road users. In the interests of safety, we would ask the public to observe these street closures and the parking restrictions.

“Vehicles parked on these roads during the closures will prevent us from undertaking the work and, as they will be committing a traffic offence, may be removed by Police Scotland.

“Please read the letters delivered to households, with details and dates for each area. We realise that these works and road closures will cause some inconvenience for residents and we’re grateful for their co-operation to help us complete this work with the minimum of disruption.”

The following streets, or parts of them, will be affected at some point after work gets underway on Sunday 14 August: Hoofields, Burnside, Norstane, Gremista Brae, Holmsgarth Brae, Staneyhill, Bruce Crescent, Haldane Burgess Crescent, Robertson Crescent, Hayfield Lane, Cairnfield Road, Russell Crescent, Goodlad Crescent, Clickimin Road, Knab Road, Cheyne Crescent, West Sletts, Union Street, King Harald Street, South King Harald Street, St Olaf Street, South St Olaf Street, King Erik Street, Upper Hillhead, Lower Hillhead, Commercial Road, Breiwick Road, Ronald Street, Lover’s Loan and Twageos Road.
