Community / Midsummer Carnival set for June return
THE MIDSUMMER Carnival is set to return to Lerwick in June.
An eye-catching array of floats, music, traditional galleys, jarl squads, trikes, dancers and foot collectors are set to fill the streets on Saturday 21 June.
Emergency services including ambulances, the coastguard and fire engines will also join the parade.
A special highlight will be the appearance of a rare old-time fire engine visiting from the North East Scotland Fire Heritage Trust, which has been billed as a “must-see” for enthusiasts and families alike.
The carnival raises funds for the Callum Younger Reach Fund, which supports young people in Shetland.
It comes during a busy weekend of entertainment, with Open Door Drama also set to host a variety concert at the Masonic Hall in Lerwick.
The Lerwick Fire Station will hold its annual open day from 12pm-4pm too, with both of these events raising for charities.
Carnival organiser Malcolm Younger said the weekend was an opportunity to enjoy a lively atmosphere while contributing to a great cause.
“The Midsummer Carnival is one of the highlights of the year in Lerwick,” he said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy the parade, and support a great cause.
“We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there and making it a memorable day.”
