Politics / Shetland Greens to host series of democracy events
THE LOCAL branch of the Greens has announced a series of public events under the title of This is Democracy.
Their purpose is to foster open, democratic discussion about issues of importance to the Shetland community.
The first of these events, Moving Beyond Inclusion: Rethinking Education in Shetland, will be held at the Islesburgh Community Centre in Lerwick on Friday 23 May starting at 7pm.
This event will take the form of a facilitated discussion about how our education system can be reimagined, to enable all young people to reach their full potential.
It follows on from a discussion paper Green councillor Alex Armitage published in Shetland News in March this year.
Moving beyond inclusion: we need diversification in our school system
The second event Keeping Shetland Safe? Exposing the War on Drugs will be held at Islesburgh on Friday 20 June, again starting at 7pm.
Author and ex-police officer Neil Woods will share his first-hand experience of working undercover at the front line of the war on drugs, infiltrating criminal networks.
He will explain how his experiences led him to realise the futility of prohibitionist drugs laws, and why a new approach is needed.
Shetland Green party member Siân Wild said further This is Democracy events will continue in the autumn, focussing on topics such as fishing, local economy, autonomy and more.
“This is Democracy events are for folk from all political persuasions and none. We’re looking forward to welcoming folk to our first event,” she said.
Armitage added: “Democracy means so much more than voting in elections every few years. We are living through times of change and it’s vital that folk can have a meaningful say about how our lives are run.
“Greens are committed to deepening democracy in Shetland and I’m looking forward to discussing these important issues in the coming months”.
All events are free to attend, and all are welcome.
