News / Mental health first aid courses to return in May

MENTAL health first aid courses are set to return to the isles in May courtesy of a former Shetland resident.

Chris Grant, a former youth worker at Anderson High School, will lead two courses in Lerwick, providing essential training to locals.

It is the third string of courses that Grant, who now works as a mental health and suicide prevention trainer, has delivered in Shetland in the last 18 months.

“I have always felt a deep connection to Shetland and the community I lived and worked in,” he said.

“Having worked with young people here, I know first-hand the importance of mental health support in small communities.

“Delivering Scotland’s mental health first aid courses in Shetland is a way for me to contribute to a place that shaped my early career.”

The course equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to respond to someone they are concerned may be struggling with their mental health or thinking about suicide.

Covering topics such as anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, and crisis management, the training aims to break down stigma and encourage open conversations about mental health challenges.

“Like many places, Shetland faces challenges in accessing mental health services, and community-based support is essential,” he said.

“This training is about empowering people to make a difference in their workplaces, social circles, and families.”

Courses are scheduled for 12-13 May, and 17-18 May, and are open to anyone interested.

Places are still available on the 17-18 May course, and people can sign up here.
