THERE were no surprises as the names of those standing for the Northern Isles seat in July’s general election were confirmed this afternoon (Friday).

Prospective candidates had up until 4pm to hand in their nomination papers.

The final list released by Orkney Islands Council shows no new names in addition to those who were previously confirmed to stand.

The candidates are, in alphabetical order: Alex Armitage (Scottish Greens), Alistair Carmichael (Scottish Liberal Democrats), Robert Leslie (SNP), Shane Painter (Scottish Conservative and Unionist), Conor Savage (Scottish Labour), Robert Smith (Reform UK).

The election will take place on Thursday 4 July. Voters should ensure that they are on the electoral register by midnight on Tuesday 18 June.

Voting will take place during the day, with the count set to be held overnight in Kirkwall in Orkney.

Shetland News will offer regular election coverage over the coming weeks.
