Court / More travel frustration for the court

LERWICK’s sheriff says the court has become “frustrated beyond belief” by travel disruption in recent months.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank made the comment on Thursday after a defence agent was unable to attend a trial in person because his Loganair flight from Aberdeen to Sumburgh was cancelled for technical reasons.

Gregor Kelly, appearing via videolink, had to apologise that he was unable to attend in person and said the situation was “not ideal”. The trial was able to be conducted via videolink.

Last month another Lerwick Sheriff Court trial was postponed for a fourth time due to travel related issues.

Three of those postponements related to weather disruption, while industrial action at airports also once scuppered the trial.

Sheriff Cruickshank said on Thursday: “I think we are all frustrated beyond belief at the travel difficulties that this court has encountered in recent months.”
