Business / Popular fish shop for sale
A WELL established and busy local fish shop is up for sale after its four owners decided the time is right to move on.
Blydoit Fish Ltd was established more than 20 years ago when the owners of the Burra based whitefish trawler Mizpah LK173 established their own fish processing unit and retail shop in Scalloway.
At the time the move was very much seen as an attempt of bucking the downward trend in the fishing industry.
The idea was to become more profitable by cutting out the middleman by processing and then selling their own freshly caught fish.
Blydoit quickly established itself as a reliable source for fresh fish locally and was able to open a second shop in Lerwick.
The company today has 16 employees, and supplies most of the country shops, the schools as well as the hospital and many hotels with fish.
Director James Shearer said they had put word out that the company was for sale and after a possible deal fell through, they are now looking more actively for an interested party to take on the job.
“The Mizpah has been sold and we have been trading for more than 20 years, so we all feel it’s been long enough, and the time is right to move on,” Shearer said.
“There has been no further interest so far, but I am certainly hoping it will be taken over, because Shetland needs it.
“It’s a good and profitable business, and this is not why we are giving it up; it’s an age thing.”
