LIVING Lerwick has secured funding to host entertainment and activities in the centre of town during this summer’s Tall Ships event.

The town centre organisation was granted £3,000 at a meeting of Lerwick Community Council on Monday.

It had already secured £5,000 from the National Lottery, while Living Lerwick is due to contribute more than £11,000 itself.

Activities would include street performers, a marquee space with seating and live music, family friendly trails and bespoke bunting.

The Tall Ships Races will visit Lerwick between 26 and 29 July.

The event itself will host entertainment and activities, but Living Lerwick will also contribute its own too in and around Commercial Street.

In its funding application the organisation said the Tall Ships will bring thousands of people into the centre of Lerwick.

“The town centre area will be much busier than usual over the event and it is important that we ensure everyone is welcomed and suitable entertainment is provided to mark this special occasion,” it said.

Living Lerwick chairman Steve Mathieson said at Monday’s meeting that the organisation is looking to “really tie the street into the event”.

He suggested there could be a nautical theme to the performers.

Community councillor Averil Simpson said she was happy to propose that the funding application be approved.
