Community / School canteen staff to cook and deliver free Christmas dinners to those struggling with cost of living

People worried about the cost of living can receive a ‘roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings’ delivered to their door – although availability is limited

PEOPLE needing a helping hand this festive period will be able to receive a free roast turkey dinner delivered to their door on Christmas Day.

The meals would be cooked up by canteen staff at Sound Primary School, who are volunteering their time to prepare the food and then deliver it on Christmas Day itself.

They are intended for anyone who may be worried about the cost of living this Christmas.

Anyone interested in receiving a meal are asked to contact 01595 744019 by Friday (9 December). Folk can say how many adults or children are in the household.

Availability is limited, though, and the offer is for people living in Lerwick only due to practicalities.

Shetland Islands Council’s catering team leader Neil Beattie said the meal would be a “roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings”.

Funding for the project is coming a from local authority Covid economic recovery fund to help people who are struggling with the cost of living crisis.

Beattie said the plan is for the food to be delivered around noon on Christmas Day.

He said the staff are “doing it for the benefit of the community that they live and work in”.
