By-Election 2019 - Shetland Central / Gordon Laverie
Independent
I moved to Shetland from Glasgow some 24 years ago. During this time I have worked mainly in the salmon industry, from fish processing to salmon farming, and finally at the Net Store, before taking early retirement.
As someone who uses most of the local facilities and services, including the bus services (watching my carbon footprint) on a daily basis, I get to meet many of the local community and discuss local issues.
I served on the Scalloway Community Council for some time which gave me an insight into, and an interest in the concerns of the local community such as the cutting of services, houses lying empty whilst demand is high and the apparent disregard of public opinion where planning decisions are decided, to name but a few.
Being retired means that I am able to devote a lot of time to the position, and am confident that if elected, I would make a positive contribution to the community.
