THE POLICE and coastguard were alerted on Wednesday morning after an item which resembled a firearm was spotted in the sea in Lerwick.

Police officers and the Lerwick coastguard rescue team attended North Ness Business Park in a bid to retrieve the item from the water.

It is understood divers have been contacted after attempts by the coastguard to retrieve the possible firearm failed.

Police say there is no risk to the wider public.
