News / Fines and penalty points dished out for driving offences

A WOMAN from Gott who sped at nearly 90 miles per hour to get distance from the car behind her – which turned out to be an unmarked police vehicle – has been fined £400 and given six penalty points.

Sarah Lalla, of Upper Strand, admitted at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday to driving at 89mph on the A970 between the Blackhill Industrial Estate and the Ladies Drive junction, where the limit is 60mph, on 28 January.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said the 40 year old was driving on her own when she became aware of a car close behind her with two men inside.

The solicitor said Lalla accelerated without paying attention to her speed to increase the distance between the vehicles.

The car, however, was an unmarked police vehicle, with officers putting on lights and pulling her over.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank said he accepted it was “clearly an error of judgement”.

Driving an overloaded works van in Lerwick earlier this year cost a 27 year old man from Levenwick £340 at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Calum Toogood, of Kinnoull, admitted driving the van on the A970 between Blackhill Industrial Estate and the Ladies Drive junction in Lerwick on 29 January when its gross weight was 4,680kg.

The maximum permissible weight of the van was 3,500kg.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said police noticed the Ford Transit tipper van and escorted it to a nearby weigh bridge.

A 43 year old man from Trondra was fined £300 and given five penalty points at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday for speeding on Lerwick’s Sound Brae.

Robert Nicolson, of Glendale, admitted driving at 61mph in the 40mph zone on 11 January 2018.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the offence occurred at around 5.45am.
