Letters / Now leave

Yes, of course he did. What is more, he still believes that if he keeps his head down for a while it will all blow over.

For the sake of those who still hang on to the battered and bruised notion of integrity in politicians, Mr Carmichael should stand down without further delay.

Mr Carmichael has shown himself to be a true modern liberal in the mould of Nick Clegg. That is someone who’s word cannot be trusted and who puts self-interest above integrity.

He has acknowledged “an error of judgement” in the first instance but his subsequent dishonesty was calculated to delay knowledge of his “error” until after his election to Westminster.

If he had still been a Cabinet Minister would we still be waiting for him to come clean? No, I am afraid that “the nice Mr Carmichael” has besmirched the age old tradition of liberalism in the northern isles by showing himself to be liberal with the truth.

If he can lie once over such an important matter how can the electorate trust him again?

Thank you for what you have achieved, now leave quickly in order to regain some dignity.

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.

Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.

Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has  over 600 supporters  who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.

Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -

  • Bring you the headlines as they happen;
  • Stay editorially independent;
  • Give a voice to the community;
  • Grow site traffic further;
  • Research and publish more in-depth news, including more Shetland Lives features.
