News / Kirk roof repairs
A CHURCH of Scotland kirk in a small Shetland village has managed to net £10,700 of government money to get its roof repaired.
Minister at the Bigton kirk, the Reverend Charles Greig praised former councillor and kirk elder Willie Tait, saying he was the driving force behind the project.
Work to replace slates, rones and down pipes at the 110 year old building will commence during the summer.
The minister said: “We are delighted to receive this money which will help us preserve the building.
“It was really church elder Willie Tait who set the ball rolling.
‘There was just a short window of opportunity to apply for this money and I am grateful for the surveyor who came out here to look at the building on Up-Helly Aa day.”
Bigton Kirk is one of 42 Scottish churches receiving a total of £2.2 million for urgent roof repair work, announced by chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander on Thursday.
