Letters / Get over it
Bill Adams (It’s not over; SN 26/9/14), among others, is starting to sound like a scratched record of Scottish football pundits, following their team’s exit from the World Cup – endless replays with plaintive, tear-choking commentary:
“If only Cameron, Clegg and Miliband had been pulled up for diving into the penalty box in injury time, it would all have been different – it’s terrible, we’ve been cheated again!
“But with our new manager, we’ll win it, next time.”
If only Alex Salmond hadn’t put the ball into his own net over currency, more like! Certainly, as far as Shetland and Orkney are concerned, given that the No vote outnumbered the Yes vote by two to one, it is over.
“Labour for Independence” Yes voters joining the SNP will make no difference, it’s No voters whose minds you need to change.
Even if another Scottish referendum results in an overall Yes victory, unless Shetland and Orkney voters experience a dramatic change of heart, they will have the opportunity to decide which country they wish to be part of.
Given the vacuity of the Scottish government’s economic proposals for independence and their damaging impact on vital industries, eg. fishing, the necessary change of heart in the Shetland and Orkney electorates is unlikely to happen any time soon.
And without “Shetland’s oil” the economics are even more seriously unattractive.
Bill, Douglas, Kennedy, etc., IT’S OVER, GET OVER IT!
