News / School closure recommended

A sign protesting school closures in Northmavine

TWO primary schools in Northmavine have been recommended for closure by Shetland Islands Council as part of its bid to cut spending.

On Friday the SIC’s children’s services department published its report into the future of Urafirth and North Roe primary schools, following a consultation earlier in the year.

The report sticks to the council’s initial recommendation to close the two schools and send their pupils to Ollaberry, despite large scale opposition in the local communities, with packed public meetings and 224 written responses.

The SIC’s education and families committee will discuss the report on 4 November when it will make a recommendation to the full council the following day.

The consultation report can be found at http://www.shetland.gov.uk/education/schools_reconfiguration_project.asp
