Letters / Telephone scam
I would like to warn your readers of the latest telephone scam I received on Tuesday.
I got a call from someone with an Indian voice saying they were working in conjunction with TPS (Telephone Preference Service) to say they were aware of the nuisance calls we had recently received and were authorised by the TPC.
First they gave me a telephone number starting with 0845, and then they asked me to make up and give them a password (which only they and I would have access to).
Finally she said that the service was free but there was a small charge for a technology box, which plugs into the telephone so I could press a button to banish all those nasty calls.
The cost? £79.00 for three years! At this point I pointed out the service from TPS was free, and she hung up!
Do not be fooled by these calls as they are NOT authorised by TPS or any other telephone company, and for the sake of your bank account, credit/debit cards etc DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CARD NUMBERS!
Be safe.
