News / Injury shuts down site
CONSTRUCTION work on the £800 million Shetland gas plant has been suspended following a worksite injury on Thursday afternoon.
Shortly after midday a man was rushed to Lerwick’s Gilbert Bain Hospital after a bone was broken by a piece of equipment that fell on his foot.
Main contractors Petrofac and oil company Total who operate the site immediately stopped construction work as part of their “Stand down for safety” policy, to allow time to reflect on the causes behind the incident.
A Petrofac spokesman said work would recommence on a phased basis as the two companies reviewed their safety arrangements.
“We have 1,500 people working on the site with jobs that are intrinsically hazardous so we take safety extremely seriously,” he said.
The injured man was discharged from hospital on Thursday night.
