Letters / Four reasons to vote NO
2014 is the year of decision in the referendum on Scottish independence.
Here, for your careful consideration, are just a few of the reasons why we are better together within the United Kingdom:
• We are fully represented in the Scottish and UK Parliaments, able to influence domestic issues at Holyrood and international issues through Westminster as part of one of the largest economies in the world.
• We benefit from higher public spending than the rest of the UK, but pay no more tax.
• Our interest rates and costs of financing public debt are lower as part of the UK, with its high credit rating and long standing reputation for honouring its debts (Alex Salmond’s SNP have threatened to renege on Scotland’s debts if he wins the referendum and doesn’t get his way on the currency: one of the most irresponsible things said so far in this campaign).
• We have access to a home market ten times the size of Scotland as part of the UK, which is good for business, jobs and public services.
All these things really matter to everyone in Shetland. Don’t put it at risk in September by taking a leap in the dark with Alex Salmond.
Vote NO in the Scottish Referendum so that we remain better together in the United Kingdom.
