News / Passenger numbers up

THE ENERGY boom in the north of Scotland continues to push up passenger numbers at the airports in Sumburgh and Wick.

Highlands and Islands Airports Limited said on Monday it had seen growth of 9.7 per cent across its 11 airports in the region, but Wick John O’Groats (+119.1 per cent) and Sumburgh (+58.5 per cent) stood out.

In September 2013, Sumburgh airport handled 25,447 passengers, while Wick’s throughput was 4,634.

There was particularly strong growth at Wick and Sumburgh, the result of increased energy traffic and growing demand for scheduled passenger services, HIAL said.

Loganair has recently increased capacity between Wick and Edinburgh, and is to provide more flights between Sumburgh and Glasgow from November.
