Letters / A fitting memorial
The memorial at Sumburgh for victims of the 1979 DanAir flight and the Chinook helicopter is a fitting place of respect and hopefully Mr Ian F.Scott of Edinburgh will return to Shetland, which could be a turning point for him (Thank you Shetland; SN 26/5/13).
The Lerwick telephone exchange was the unseen communication link at the time and I vividly remember the teatime TV news in 1979 before leaving home early to join many colleagues at the exchange in our professional manner with some having local knowledge of fast communication (no internet, mobile phones or computers).
The Lerwick exchange closed in March 1987, but not the memory of Sumburgh.
The feeling of us mainland Scots, like Mr Scott, is that Shetland takes immediate and instant care of life in the islands. Well done the committee of Sumburgh memorial.
Mrs C Donald
