News / Earth Hour – Spot the difference
THE WORLD’S biggest ever event in support of people and wildlife threatened by climate change appears to have left Shetlanders rather unimpressed.
WWF’s Earth Hour asked people, communities and public organisations around the globe to switch off their lights for one hour to highlight that “Scotland cares about tackling climate change”.
Many public organisations including Shetland Islands Council had pledged to switch off at 8.30 pm on Saturday night.
At last year’s event, Shetland was recognised as the Community ‘Lights Out’ UK winner, thanks to the large number of individuals, businesses and groups which took part.
However, judging by this series of photographs, taken by local photographer Austin Taylor, life around Lerwick seems to have continued without much disruption. (First row – during Earth Hour, bottom row – afterwards)
Historic Scotland had switched off the lights at the Clickimin Broch, but the Clickimin Leisure Centre remained well illuminated as were all the streetlights in Lerwick.
