News / Drug running Liverpool mum faces jail

A YOUNG mother from Liverpool faces a jail sentence after being caught importing heroin worth around £21,000 into Shetland.

On Wednesday, 21 year old Virginia Creggy admitted supplying the Class A drug when she appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

Creggy, whose address was given as Cornton Vale prison, was arrested after police acting on a tip off stopped her in Lerwick’s South Lochside on 7 April after she had travelled by taxi from Sumburgh Airport.

She was taken to Gilbert Bain Hospital in the town and found to be concealing internally 1,049 pre-prepared packages containing a total of 160.8 grammes of heroin.

The court heard that Creggy was unemployed and had a seven month old son who has been looked after by her mother since she was locked up following her arrest.

Sheriff Graeme Napier read a letter she had written while in prison claiming she had brought in the drugs after being threatened in connection to her involvement with cocaine.

Sheriff Napier, who has heard many similar stories from Merseyside drug couriers bringing drugs into Shetland, said he had no sympathy for people who were quite happy to get other people involved in hard drugs.

Sentence was deferred for three weeks while a social work report is compiled.
