Singing challenge raises ‘unbelievable’ £1,600

Andy Anderson was raising money for an Ability Shetland football team’s upcoming trip to Edinburgh

Andy Anderson has raised more than £1,600 through his month-long singing challenge.

A CHARITY fundraiser says there is a “lot to be thankful for” after more than £1,600 was donated to his recent singing challenge.

Andy Anderson undertook a challenge to film himself singing a song a day between 3 September and 3 October, with clips posted to a Facebook page.

Money raised will go towards an Ability Shetland football team’s upcoming trip to Edinburgh, which he will be taking part in.

Speaking after the challenge – which he called ‘Jive Gibbing’ – came to an end, Anderson told Shetland News that he wanted to thank not just those who donated but also folk who gave him encouragement and helped it along the way.

The creative industries student, who has a long affiliation with Ability Shetland and is now a trustee with the charity, said the way things panned out was “unbelievable and unimaginable”.

When asked about his favourite songs he sung during the challenge, Anderson gave three – the Michael Jackson and Barrie Gibb duet All in Your Name, the Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive and the country tune Before the Next Teardrop Falls.

“It’s hard to pick,” he added – and no wonder, given the number of songs he went through during the challenge.

Anderson said there will be “bonus videos” still coming despite the challenge coming to an end.

“There’s stuff I’ve already recorded which I’ll put up at future dates,” he added.

The football tournament meanwhile will take place in Edinburgh on Saturday (10 October), with Ability Shetland putting together an LD (learning disability) team.

Ability Shetland team leader Stephanie Bain said charity was “really proud of Andy for what he has achieved through his month-long challenge”.

“It is so great to see him so confident in performing online daily and I think he has benefitted from it as much as we have,” she added.

“Together with other members of the Shetland LD Football team, they are well on their way to raising the funds they need to travel to Edinburgh this weekend to compete.”
