No plans for Norröna Shetland stop-off for Faroe Island Games
THERE are no plans to change the timetable next summer to allow Faroe passenger ferry Norröna to stop off in Shetland to collect the isles’ Island Games team.
The is the message from ferry operator Symril Line ahead of the 2027 Island Games in Faroe.
Team Shetland will be sending a number of competitors to the event next July, and it is understood attempts were made to ascertain the situation with the Norröna.
Shetland Islands Council, through the then Shetland Development Trust, invested more than £4 million in the ferry in 2002, with the boat bringing a direct link with Scandinavia including Bergen.
In 2007 Shetland was struck off the schedule, but the Norröna continues to closely pass by the isles on its journeys.
She was pictured, for instance, travelling through Yell Sound on Monday.
A spokesperson for Symril Line told Shetland News: “At present, Smyril Line has no plans to make alterations to Norröna’s timetable for the 2027 Island Games, including a stop in Shetland.”
These days the ferry sails from Iceland to Faroe, and then Faroe to Denmark, before completing a return leg.
Next year’s Island Games are set to take place in Faroe from 3-9 July.
Even if there was a hypothetical Shetland stop-off, the Norröna’s schedule does not quite fit in – with the vessel due to leave Iceland on 1 July, and getting to Denmark on 3 July.
She is then due to sail from Denmark to Faroe, arriving on 4 July.
The closest sailing to Faroe prior to the games starting is on 29 June.
It is understood Team Shetland will have to travel to the Scottish mainland, likely to be Edinburgh, to then fly to Faroe.
