Marine / Cruise season has to wait a little longer as call cancelled due to weather

THE CRUISE season in Lerwick will be delayed in starting after the cancellation of a call into the harbour next week.

The 229-metre Viking Neptune was scheduled to arrive in Lerwick at 8am on Monday (30 March) to kick off the cruise season proper.

The ship, which would have sailed from Bergen, would have had an estimated 930 passengers on board.

The next cruise visit in the schedule is the smaller Spitsbergen, which is due to arrive on Saturday 4 April with an estimated 335 passengers.

A cruise ship was due to call into Lerwick at the end of January for Up Helly Aa, but this was also cancelled because of the weather conditions.

Nearly 150 cruise ships are expected to call into Lerwick this year.

The final visit on the schedule is on 12 November, with the 150-metre Le Commandant Charcot set to call into Lerwick on a maiden visit.

Meanwhile tonight’s (Friday) NorthLink’s sailings are cancelled due to the weather forecast.
