BUSINESSES from across the Lerwick town centre were celebrated at a new Living Lerwick awards ceremony on Friday night.

Over 70 people gathered at the Lerwick Town Hall for the first town centre business awards, with awards handed out to recognise the hard work and community spirit on show on the street.

More than 1,900 people cast their votes for the businesses they felt went above and beyond, whether through excellent service, creating a welcoming atmosphere, or making a positive contribution to the town.

Three finalists were announced for each awards category, with the winners being presented with awards by Living Lerwick’s directors.

The awards were also crafted locally by Rae Simpson.

Celia Smith of café Blyde Welcome was crowned the first ever town centre champion, recognising someone who goes above and beyond to make Lerwick town centre a truly welcoming and great place to visit.

She was praised by voters as creating “the friendliest and most welcoming place in town,” where “you never feel alone when you visit,” and where customers are always made to feel valued.

Living Lerwick said the event was made possible with support from sponsors Lerwick Port Authority.

Project manager Emma Miller called it a “very special evening”.

“We were able to recognise and celebrate the hard working people who make our towncentre special,” she said.

“It was an honour to be able to present the awards, voted for by customers, to the winners and to give everyone the chance to come together and celebrate.

“Our continuing thanks to everyone who works so hard to provide such a fantastic range of goods and services for the Shetland community in our town centre.”

The other award winners were as follows:
