LERWICK Amateur Swimming Club (LASC) hosted its Blueshell Mussels February meet on Sunday at Clickimin.

Events swum were all strokes over 100m and 200m, 200m and 400m individual medley and 400m and 800m freestyle.

The club said it was delighted to welcome over 100 swimmers competing in three age groups from five clubs – Delting Dolphins (DD), Lerwick (LK), Shetland Hurricanes (SH), South Mainland (SM) and Westside Sharks (WS).

There were great performances over the two sessions, with Julian Okroj (DD) breaking both a North District 14 years short course record which had stood since 2003 (subject to verification) and also the Shetland 13-14 years age group record in the 200m backstroke.

Some excellent swimming and races produced 262 personal best times or new times. Several swimmers also gained qualification times for the 2026 ScottishNational Age Group Championships in April.

Jorgie Wilson (SH) made a 65-second improvement to his 200m breaststroke time, with Taylor McLaughlan (SH) improved by 58s on the 200m freestyle.

Other major notable improvements were Nicholas Cluness (SH) by 38s on 400m freestyle, Ellie Manson (LK) 26s on 100m freestyle and Cora Grant (LK) 20s on 200m individual medley.

LASC thanked meet sponsor Blueshell Mussels and Annika Laurenson, who presented the medals on their behalf.

The club also thanked all the officials who helped on the day including referees Karen Gray, who travelled up from Glasgow, and Babs Ross, as well as everyone who helped in any capacity, from announcer to marshals, fundraisers, lunch providers and Clickimin staff.


SHAUNA Moar competed at the official Scotland’s Strongest Woman event in Dumfries on Saturday in the under-82kg weight category.

She started the day strong with an event win on the overhead press event, lifting 70kg from the floor to overhead an impressive eight times – living up to her nickname ‘shooders’.

Moar went on to deadlift 190kg for seven reps, carry a 240kg yoke 20m, throw bags ranging from 11-15kg over a 4m bar, and finished with atlas stones ranging from 100-140kg.

She had a consistent performance with lots of personal goals achieved, and was pleased to finish second on the podium again to place higher than last year.

A podium finish means Moar has qualified for the official Britain’s Strongest Woman at the Bolton Arena in May.

LHD HAS donated a new table tennis table to support the increased interest in the sport.

Managing director Brian Spence handed over the table after hearing that as many as 80 competitors were turning up for league nights.

A number of young Shetland players have also been called up to a national north region squad for developing possible Scottish players of the future.

Dylan Ritch, Peony Li, Ava Swift, Eve Johnson, Hanna Sneider and Terry Peterson have been invited into the squad, with players who impress potentially being invited into the Scottish pathways training squad.


TEN MAN Brechin City held out for a potentially pivotal 1-0 victory over Highland League leaders Brora Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Shetlander Spencer Moreland started for Brechin, who took an early lead through a Cillian Sheridan goal.

But Brechin then had to hold out the final 70 minutes with 10 men after a 20th minute red card, with Moreland playing a major role in shutting Brora out before he was substituted 10 minutes from full-time.


SHETLAND men’s rugby players suffered a heavy and bruising defeat to league leaders Highland 2nd on Saturday.

Highland ran out 96-15 winners on their home turf, with Shetland welcoming Ross Sutherland this weekend as they look to make amends.
