Transport / Air Discount Scheme extended until at least March 2027

THE AIR Discount Scheme (ADS), which offers eligible island travellers 50 per cent off core air fares, has been extended until March 2027.

Transport Scotland has confirmed the scheme will be formally renewed on 1 April 2026 until at least 31 March 2027.

It added that ministers were “also considering how the scheme could be reviewed”.

The scheme now requires to be notified to the UK Competition and Markets Authority in line with the requirements of the UK Government’s Subsidy Control.

Transport Scotland said that, once this is confirmed, ministers intend to extend the ADS beyond March 2027.

The scheme subsidises air fares for communities in Scotland’s Highlands and Islands, making travel more affordable for the people who rely on the services.

It gives a 50 per cent discount on core air fares for residents of Caithness and parts of Sutherland, Colonsay, Islay, Jura, Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.

It also applies to students from these areas who are studying away from home, and to students studying in eligible areas, but whose main residence is elsewhere.

Connectivity minister Jim Fairlie said the ADS “plays a vital role in keeping our rural and island communities connected”.

“I am pleased to confirm the continuation of the scheme,” he said in a statement to Shetland News.

“The scheme will remain open to all the eligible areas and to students at the colleges within them.

“The Scottish Government is committed to supporting residents and communities in the Highlands and Islands.

“Through this scheme we are directly tackling the issue of high air fares in these areas, while ensuring eligible travellers remain connected with family and education opportunities.”
