Community / First ever Lerwick town centre business awards launched
THE FIRST ever awards for businesses in Lerwick town centre have been launched today (Monday) by Living Lerwick.
The public are being invited to vote for their favourites across six award categories, including retailer of the year, hospitality business of the year and Lerwick town centre champion.
Living Lerwick said the awards, which are being sponsored by Lerwick Port Authority, are an opportunity to celebrate all that is great about the town centre and those that put in extra effort to provide memorable experiences to locals and tourists alike.
The remaining award categories include health and beauty business of the year, professional service business of the year and new business of the year.
This award covers all businesses that have opened in Lerwick town centre in the 19 months before the vote deadline.
The Lerwick town centre champion award will see individual nominations for those whose contribution to the town centre experience generally is recognised as outstanding.
Voting is open now and will continue for eight weeks until Friday 6 March.
A presentation ceremony will be held on Friday 20 March for all Living Lerwick members, where the winners will be announced to the public.
The top nominees in each category will be announced prior to the event.
Living Lerwick chairman Steve Mathieson said the awards would celebrate the efforts of the people who work hard every day to make the town centre a “welcoming place”.
“From the hospitality offered to tens of thousands of visitors every year, the sponsorship and support given to local community groups; the daily service provision, customer care and goods supplied – we invite you to share your appreciation for our local businesses.”
Captain Calum Grains, chief executive of sponsors Lerwick Port Authority, said they saw every day how important the local businesses were to the success of the street.
