STUART Nicolson was elected to the Lerwick Up Helly Aa committee on Tuesday night.

Nicolson won the vote at the first mass meeting of guizers, beating Steven Hutton by 136 votes to 86.

The 32-year-old spoke of his long family tradition within the Lerwick festival, having first become involved at the age of eight.

He will have to wait until 2041 to lead the festival.

Stuart follows in his father David’s footsteps, who was guizer jarl in 2012, and uncles Graham and John – 2007 and 2019 guizer jarls – in being at the head of the Lerwick fire festival.

His grandfather Jim Nicolson was also jarl in 1979.
