Sport / Young swimmers smash personal bests at age group championships
SHETLAND Swimming Association hosted its age group championships last Sunday at the Clickimin pool in Lerwick.
It said it was delighted to have 136 swimmers from five clubs – Delting Dolphins (DD), Lerwick (LK), Shetland Hurricanes (SH), South Mainland (SM) and Westside Sharks (WS) – competing on the day.
Events swum were all strokes over 25m, 50m or 100m depending on age, a 200m individual medley for 11 years and over and relays.
There were said to be some great performances over the two sessions, with numerous personal bests recorded.
Highlights in the morning session included an 11s PB for Sophie Winks (SH) in the 25m freestyle, before Nicholas Cluness (SH) took 30s off his PB in the 100m butterfly and both Ayanda Armitage (SM) and Caitlin Galbraith (LK) 11s off their bests.
In the 100m backstroke Eilidh Smith (SM) reduced her time by 32s, CowynMiddleton (DD) by 22s, James Drakeford (WS) 19s, Jessie Leask (LK) 14s and Elsie Peterson (WS) 11s.
The 200m individual medley saw another PB for Peterson of 22s, 17s for Sophia Cheatle (SH) and Rory Peterson (LK) 14s.
The morning session was rounded off by the 8-10 years mixed 100m relays. In the medley event gold went to Westside Sharks A, silver to Shetland A and bronze to South Mainland A.
In the freestyle it was gold and silver to Westside Sharks and Shetland again respectively, and Lerwick A took the bronze.
The afternoon’s first event, the 100m breaststroke, saw more good improvements with PBs of 23s for Eilidh Smith (SM), 18s for Mya Johnson (DD) and 14s for Tiger Johnson (LK).
Eilidh Smith had another excellent PB of 34s in the 100m freestyle, where Ali Summers dropped his time by 13s.
The mixed 4 x 50m relays were an exciting finish to the meet, with Lerwick A taking gold in the 11-13 medley and freestyle relays.

In the 14 and over age group, Lerwick took gold in the medley and in the freestyle too.
The 2025 Shetland age group champions are:
• 8 year olds – Kirsten Sjoberg (SM) and Bjorn Irving
• 9 year olds – Ariah Sjoberg (SH) and James Leslie (SM)
• 10 year olds (girls) – Camryn Cheyney (SH) and Sophie Burden (SH)
• 10 Year olds (boys) – Fraser Wishart (WS) and Lowrie Adamson (SM)
• 11-12 girls – Eve Moncrieff (SH) and Stella Okroj (DD)
• 11-12 boys – Archie Flaws (SM)
• 13-14 year olds – Jenny Adamson (SM) and Julian Okroj (DD)
• 15-16 year olds – Carys Geddes (LK) and Lockie Bullough (WS)
• 17 and over – Caitlin Galbraith (LK) and Finlay Geddes (LK)
The 2025 Shetland age group open champions are:
• 100m butterfly – Jenny Adamson and Lockie Bullough
• 100m backstroke – Jenny Adamson and Julian Okroj
• 100m breaststroke – Jenny Adamson and Finlay Geddes
• 100m freestyle – Jenny Adamson and Julian Okroj
• 200m individual medley – Jenny Adamson and Julian Okroj
Shetland Swimming Association thanked referees Babs Ross and John Rae, all the officials and helpers and the Clickimin pool staff.
The association said it wanted to gave a big well done to all the swimmers trying new strokes and distances for the first time and those in their first competition, adding it was an excellent day of racing.
