Sport / Adamson and Finlayson through to final of sailing world championships

Cal Finlayson and Maggie Adamson are through to the 2025 finals.

REIGNING champions Maggie Adamson and Cal Finlayson have cruised into Monday’s final of the 2025 Offshore Double Handed World Championships.

The pair were first across the line in their qualifier in the Isle of Wight earlier this week, doing so in a time of just under 19 hours, to earn their place in next week’s final.

Adamson said they had to grab 20 minute naps each to keep sharp during the sprint race, while snacking on the go to ensure they kept their focus.

“We’ve worked hard on not panicking mid-fleet, just resetting, giving ourselves a quick pep talk and getting back in the game. That mindset made a difference here.

“We’re delighted to start our 2025 campaign this way. Securing a spot in the final was the main goal, and now we can look forward to the battle for the title.”

Speaking to Shetland News earlier this month, Adamson explained that the main difference between this race and others is that every boat in the race is exactly the same.

She said that when racers return to shore, the race organisers return their boats to “neutral” – “no matter what you’ve changed”.

Adamson said they had never been in a position before where 21 teams were gunning for their crown.

“Another podium place would be a great result for us,” she said.

“Hopefully we can go out there and do Shetland proud.”
