Community / Citizens advice looking for more volunteers after another busy year

THE SHETLAND Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is on the look-out for more volunteers amid growing demand.

The branch unlocked more than £1.9 million for local residents over the last financial year, helping people access money through successful benefit claims, appeals, back payments, employment entitlements, energy grants and more.

During 2024/25 the local branch supported 1,671 individuals, with 690 new to the service.

Around 55 per cent of the advice given out related to benefits, with other areas including utilities, debt, housing and employment.

Meanwhile in just the last seven years more than £12.5 million has been achieved in financial gains for more than 1,800 clients.

Over this time period more than 6,500 individual clients have been assisted on over 48,000 issues by CAB advisers.

Speaking at the organisation’s recent AGM, manager Della Armstrong said: “Our annual report makes it clear: the cost-of-living crisis has become a permanent reality for many households across Shetland.

“It’s important to take a moment to recognise what we’ve achieved – over £1.9 million put back into the pockets of local people. Often these are small sums, but they can make a life-changing difference to a struggling family.

“We’re quite literally helping people sleep at night – relieving the stress of choosing between heating, food, or paying a bill.

“That money also stays in the community, supporting local shops and the wider economy.”

Armstrong added that many people may not realise what financial support they are entitled to, particularly social security benefits.

“We can carry out a free check to see if you might be eligible,” she said.

“Or you can use our online tool at www.moneymap.scot to check yourself.”

With increasing numbers turning to CAB for help, the charity is actively looking for volunteers to support its frontline services.

“As a small local charity, we can’t afford to hire more staff,” Armstrong said.

“We rely on volunteers, and we urgently need more people to come forward.

“You don’t need specific qualifications – just a willingness to help your community and a few spare hours each week.

“We provide full training, mentoring, and cover travel expenses. You’ll gain new skills, make friends, and have the satisfaction of knowing you’re making a real difference.”

Volunteers are asked to commit around six to eight hours per week.

Alternatively, those with strategic or leadership experience may consider joining the board of directors.

To find out more or express interest in volunteering, people are advised to contact Della Armstrong on sicab@shetland.org.

Meanwhile anyone looking for advice can phone 01595 694696 or email sicab@shetland.org.
